![]() ![]() Galgut's unsettling triptych of travel stories (shortlisted for the 2010 Man Booker Prize) play disarming tricks with perspective, as the Damon in the stories flips identities with Damon the narrator. ![]() In memory, we narrativise ourselves like novelists. Carruthers' dense, ambitious analysis of the medieval mind is an extraordinary work of scholarship. Carruthers provides a brilliant critique of key texts such as Frances Yates's The Art of Memory, showing that medieval memoria was nothing less than a theory of the recombinative power of thought. Building on classical ideas, such as the "method of loci" attributed to Simonides (think of a place and fill it with striking images corresponding to the items you want to remember), our medieval ancestors turned remembering into a developed art. Memory was a big thing when books had to be copied out by hand. While the field of memory has moved on a fair bit in the eighteen years since this was published, its erudition and scientific authority make it unmatched as an introduction to the study of autobiographical memory. Particularly interesting is his focus on how memory processes are depicted and interrogated by visual artists, although the pictures unfortunately don't reproduce too well in the paperback. In this, his first book, he provides a detailed and highly readable account of how memories are encoded, stored and retrieved, how remembering is damaged and preserved in amnesia, and how memories are distorted by trauma. Harvard psychologist Schacter has been a leading figure in the cognitive neuroscience of episodic memory. Searching for Memory by Daniel L Schacter In poised, humorous prose, he ranges from the stories of respondents to an 1899 survey who had "flashbulb" memories of hearing of the death of Abraham Lincoln, to the diary study of psychologist Willem Wagenaar, who for six years wrote out a daily memory so that he could test his own forgetting, to the nineteenth-century French philosopher Jean-Marie Guyau, who asked why the years speed by more quickly as we age. For the long view on how humans have gone about studying it, this book by a Dutch historian of psychology is hard to beat. Memory has been a topic of fascination for centuries. Why Life Speeds Up As You Get Older by Douwe Draaisma But several books, although sometimes a little out of date, had profound influences on my thinking about memory's slippery charms. Keeping up with the latest research meant that I stuck mainly to journal articles when writing Pieces of Light. Why do we get memory so wrong? One possible reason is that memories are precious to us: they define us in many ways, and so we react with discomfort to the idea that they are the constructions of a story-telling mind.Īlthough few scientists would quibble with the idea of the reconstructive nature of memory, there have been some hot new developments: in understanding the social dimensions of remembering, particularly in the very young and very old in working out how memory functions in trauma and extreme emotion and in linking remembering the past to thinking about the future, to imagination and to creativity. But surveys tell us that many people remain wedded to a view of memories as immutable, static possessions. ![]() A memory is stitched together in the present moment from several different kinds of information, in a process that's subject to the current beliefs and biases of the person doing the remembering. Roughly four decades of research (with historical precedents that stretch back much further) tell us that this kind of memory is essentially reconstructive. I was interested in a branch of memory research that straddles the two: autobiographical memory, or the memory we have for the events of our own lives. An essential distinction is between memory for facts (semantic memory) and memory for events (episodic memory). You can specialise in short-term memory (memory traces that persist for a few seconds) or cast your net into memories that stretch back through an entire human lifetime. No surprise, then, that studying memory proliferates into numerous sub-disciplines. Any intelligent system needs some way of tracking where it is in time, and that means remembering where it has been. W hen I told people that I was going to write a book on memory, I saw "good luck with that" written on a few faces. ![]() ![]() ![]() Here’s another painting with just black, white, and burnt sienna. Doing without green or yellow was a challenge, but I enjoyed pushing the limits. ![]() ![]() Here’s a painting that I did with just White, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, and Winsor Red. Sometimes, like a madman on a crash diet, I like to jettison even more colors from this already spartan palette. You can paint almost anything in nature with Stobart’s six colors. This is a good palette to use in miniature plein air kits, like thumb boxes. You can get a good “black” from Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine. One simplified palette that I particularly like for landscape painting in oil is from John Stobart in his excellent book, “The Pleasures of Painting Outdoors.” He recommends:Ĭadmium Yellow Light, Winsor Red, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue Deep, Permanent Green (optional), and Titanium White. Below: a plein-air painting I did in Windham, New York. There are a lot of limited palettes that still give you a full range of mixtures. In fact you can paint almost anything in nature with just four or five colors. The final reason to consider limited palettes is that they’re portable and you can save money. Painting from one of these limited sets is like writing music for a string quartet instead of for a symphony orchestra.Ĥ. Click to enlarge and see their component colors. You can make color wheel tests to preview the range of possibilities with limited palettes. There’s nothing wrong with black or brown or green, but you should know how to mix color without them, too. The legendary background painter of museum dioramas, James Perry Wilson, never used browns or black because he wanted to keep his mixtures more pure. It’s a good idea every once in a while to leave of all your browns and greens in the cabinet and mix them from the primary colors instead. If you have colors called “flesh tone” and “grass green,” you’ll probably reach for them when you’re painting skin or a lawn. The third reason to limit the palette is to force yourself away of color mixing habits. Below is the actual color of her forehead, the warmest the colors ever get in this scheme:ģ. I wouldn’t have tried this color scheme if I weren’t forced to by a limited palette. I painted this head study in a sketch group with just a blue and black and just a hint of warm. The two-color discipline made those old illustrators into very resourceful colorists. Magazine illustrators in the 1920s and 30s were often required to paint in two-color palettes, like the black and orange painting above by Mead Schaeffer. It’s easier to convey a mood or to explore strange realms you wouldn’t normally choose. Every color you mix is automatically related. If you construct a picture out of fewer colors, the resulting mixtures are more likely to be unified and harmonious-and more interesting. This is what happens if you use every color in the spectrum and fill the whole canvas with details. I did this painting as an experiment in bad taste. I present my own book cover illustration, called “Glory Lane,” as a negative example. If you have all the colors squeezed out around the edges of your mixing surface, you might tend to use them all in a single picture. There are at least four good reasons to limit your palette.ġ. In the art store we still ogle the all the delicious colors.īut it’s a good idea to limit the range of color pigments or the “palette” that you use on any particular painting. It has emerged as one of the trendiest colors of 2022 and also ranks within the top three for all interior areas to redecorate in. Green is becoming a more common choice in kitchens, ranking second. White also ranked in the three most popular for several rooms in the house that might “benefit from the illusion of more space,” such as pantries, home offices, and laundry rooms, according to the study. “With white kitchens, there’s never a risk of looking dated in a few years, while the sleek minimalistic feel is effortlessly complemented by dark counters or contrasting kitchen accessories,” says Living Cozy, a home design resource, which analyzed global search data about design over the last 12 months. © Klaus Vedfelt - DigitalVision / Getty ImagesĬlassic white remains the most popular color choice in kitchens, but homeowners continue to experiment with wider palettes for that room and other areas of the home. ![]() ![]()
